The SHARC community is profoundly saddened by the loss of Nic Thompson, our beloved Deputy CEO.
Her job title doesn’t come close to describing Nic’s place in our community. As well as a deeply respected colleague, she was a confidant, advocate, champion and friend.
Nic died suddenly of natural causes at home on 23 January.
She had been part of the SHARC family for decades, having first reached out for help as a young adult.
In 2020, Nic joined SHARC as manager of our Residential Peer Programs. Two years later, she also took responsibility for the Intentional Peer Support Australian Hub and was appointed Deputy CEO.
To everything she did at SHARC, Nic brought her sharp mind and gentle nature.
One of her greatest attributes was her seamless integration of lived expertise with extensive qualifications and practice wisdom. Nearing completion of a Masters of Public Health, having received accolades and awards throughout her studies, she was the essence of a quiet achiever.
Nic radiated warmth, offering enveloping hugs in the middle of the office, with a grin that could light up your heart. Her personal integrity meant she could be counted on, in countless ways. Nic always had your back.
A proud member of the LGBTIQA+ community, Nic’s office was dominated by an enormous Progress Pride flag, sending a vital message of welcome and safety.
Her impact in the recovery community extended far beyond SHARC, rippling through peer support groups and 12-step fellowships in Melbourne and beyond.
Over many years, she showed up, again and again, for herself and for those who needed her. She spent countless hours in service to others, not only touching lives, but saving them.
Nic made a difference.
The SHARC community joins Nic’s family, her partner, Nic, and all who loved her, in mourning an extraordinary human being.
We carry her with us as we continue her legacy.
She was a shining light.
